Contemporary Human Intercultural Scene

1. Affirmative action—Should the United States government support affirmative action for purposes of employment, educational opportunity and/or the awarding of government contracts? Your report should include a definition, history and rationale for A.A., interviews with representatives of pro and con positions, and a summary of your reaction to the opinions expressed by the interviewees.

2. Immigration—Should undocumented aliens (people who have entered the United States without visas) be permitted to apply for permanent residence and/or citizenship? What effect does illegal immigration have on such issues as employment, business development, the cost of social services, and American culture? What are some problems associated with illegal immigration? Your report should include interviews with representatives of pro and con positions, and a summary of your reaction to the opinions expressed by the interviewees.

3. Same-sex marriage—Should state and local governments legally recognize marriages between people of the same sex? Should gay couples be granted all the rights, freedoms and benefits guaranteed to heterosexual couples? Your report should include interviews with representatives of pro and con positions, and a summary of your reaction to the opinions expressed by the interviewees.

4. The ‘N’ Word—The “N” word has been used historically as a term of racial bigotry and discrimination; however, many young people today feel the term is acceptable for use among friends. Should the ‘N’ word be used informally? If so, in what circumstances should the word be used, by whom, and for what purposes? Your report should include interviews with representatives of pro and con positions, and a summary of your reaction to the opinions expressed by the interviewees.

5. Race & Gender in Presidential Politics—With the candidacies of Barack Obama, Hilary Clinton and Mitt Romney, many pundits are saying that race, gender and religion are no longer issues in presidential politics. Others disagree. Based on interviews and readings, identify arguments and evidence indicating the extent to which race, gender and/or religion are influencing presidential politics.
