International Business and Strategy

International Business and Strategy:
MNEs Country-Specific Advantages and Firm-Specific Advantages

Choose a multinational enterprise in the emerging world.

  1. Justify that it is a multinational enterprise or not by analysing its sales financials by region.
  2. Using the theories of the course, analyse whether and how the home country is a source of country-specific advantage (CSA) for the firm. If the home country is not source of CSA, does your firm rely on the CSA of a host country? If so please detail your analysis and explain.
  3. Is the firm’s strategy based on firm-specific advantages (FSAs), and if so, which one are those and how are they built?
  4. Which type of generic strategy your firm follows and how does it compare to its most important competitors in the industry?
NOTES

  1. Explain why this firm qualifies as an MNE. By reading and analysing the annual report of the firm for the year, report the data on the total revenues (in US$ United States Dollar currency and the reporting currency if the firm reports in other currency), and the ratio of foreign sales/ total sales (F/T).

  1. Identify the firm in the relevant cell of the FSA/CSA matrix (aFSAs: firm-specific advantages; CSAs: country-specific advantages). You will need to explicitly state the CSAs and FSAs of this firm, or explain why it may not have these.
