MANAGING THE GLOBAL WORKFORCE
Whether
through involvement with multi-national companies or the increasing diversity
of the workforce in most industrialised societies, we are all coming into
greater contact with people from different cultures who bring differing understandings
of the nature of management, the role of organisations within the wider society
and differing beliefs, values and ethics.
Such differences can
be a source of both conflict and creativity, and is one of the most important
issues of the 21st century. Together
with the recognition that the dominance of western perspectives on all areas of
management is not always appropriate and can no longer be sustained. This
module aims to equip students with the knowledge and capabilities needed to
negotiate productive and respectful relationships across boundaries of culture,
ideology and belief
TASK:
Critically assess, using relevant theoretical frameworks, the
cross cultural environments of a suitable industry, organisation or similar
construct and make recommendations as to management practice in the chosen
scenario.
Write a self
reflective report on how the learning taken from this module has contributed to
their existing portfolio of transferable skills and could be used to enhance
their individual employability for the future.
CASE SCENARIO:
Imagine that the University of Derby is about to
provide higher education courses in either a named country in Europe or a
named country in Asia. Select only one
location to use as the basis for the assignment. You must name the country at the beginning of
your assignment.
Assess the management
challenges and opportunities this undertaking will present for the University
and produce a report providing recommendations for the approach that the
University could take to ensure success.
