Applying Theory to Practice

1. For this discussion, imagine that your agency wants to tackle a specific health concern in the community. Kristin and Dan are working on a grant application for a program that will attempt to remediate the problem. Yesterday, Kristin asked you for some background on theoretical models. She would like the grant application to address the theoretical foundations to remediation specific to the health concern they are talking about, but she isn't certain what model to use.
Select a theoretical model from the readings that would be appropriate for the health issue that your agency is addressing (your choice). Discuss its attributes and then give an example of this theory utilizing a pressing public health issue or a noted health disparity.



2. Continuing the same scenario, Kristin and Dan have submitted the grant application, and several people from your agency have gone out to lunch to celebrate. Over lunch, the group has engaged in a spirited debate about social policy and health interventions.
The debate comes down to this question: are public health needs better served by individual and targeted interventions or by broadly defined efforts aimed at communities and designed to address social, economic, and political issues? Take a stance and post your argument. Be sure to explain and support your position and provide some examples to illustrate your points.
 
Policies, Priorities, and Social Values

Social policies are often reflective of the general values and priorities of a society. Select a social policy in the United States and discuss its effects on the public's health. Consider, but do not limit yourself to, the following questions:

• What factors influenced the development of this policy?
• How has it been implemented?
• Has it been successful?
• Has the policy played a role in eliminating health disparities?
• Why or why not?
