Research Proposal on Sodexo
Research is examination, experimentation, and development. It’s about finding the underlying character, identity, history, being forward thinking, risk taking, suggesting, developing, creating, exploring, finding, putting it into context, and making it contemporary.
In today’s fashion industries, as so many research sources have been explored already, it is about how you, the designer being able to explore your unique view and how you interpret your ideas from them. To be derivative in the use of your research basis only shows basic utilisation skills, but to be broad with your exploration and ‘edit for purpose’ shows a heightened awareness.
For this unit you are required to produce a formally written Research Proposal for the company/product area you are working with in the Industry Opportunity unit, which is:
Sodexo is an internationally renowned Company and a Global Market leader providing Quality of Life service solutions.
Sodexo is a world leader in food services and has won the hospitality contract for the 2012 Olympic Games & the Public catering contract for South Park. They will be responsible for eight top end, fine dining restaurants, which will be housed in a state of the art triple decker marquee next to the main stadium and a series of public catering pods located in and around the stadium. Each restaurant will celebrate a different sport and the fine dining experience; will be defined by the delivery of two services:
- Drinks
- Food
Sodexo will have 600 staff working each day over a six week period, providing a quality experience and service to an estimated 40,000 customers within Hospitality.
As part of the public offer, Sodexo will be providing food & drink to all of the visitors to the stadium and other areas of the south section of the Olympic Park.
Your research proposal should be made up of the following:
A brief overview of the company and product area you will be undertaking the research into.
WHAT:
What do you need to find out?
What research do you need to undertake?
What research methods will you be utilizing?
HOW:
How will you undertake your research?
How can you ensure that the information you collect is accurate and relevant?
How does the research inform your design and development process?
WHY:
Why have you selected these areas for research?
Why have you selected the research methodologies you state?
ANALYSIS:
How effective has the research and research methodology been?
What control measures can/have been put in place to ensure successful research outcomes?
What are the limitations of the research methodologies you have used and how can this be improved?
As part of the analysis stage you can include a research outcome that you have produced as part of your Industry Opportunity unit (such as a shop report, consumer profile, branding profile etc) as a case study. Utilise this to examine the effectiveness of the research, the research methodology, what has been successful, how you have measured this and how the research and methodology can be improved. The analysis of your own piece of research will not effect the assessment of this research within the other unit. Rather, it will help you to understand and develop your research skills and effectiveness for the future.
Consider the use of visuals and layout within this document to increase its appeal and overall levels of presentation.
This unit works in conjunction with the Industry Opportunity unit where you are working on design and realisation linked to a real and live company and fashion product. Using this company and product area you can contextualise research methodologies and findings in order to give focus to your Research Methods work but also to support your Industry Opportunity unit and all future units which you undertake as part of your course.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGIES
In consideration of a design concept, you are asked to identify research methodologies, both primary and secondary, and use these to explore and experiment, collate data to inform your decision making and build a true understanding of your product/company/market sector. You will be expected to carry out the following:
Commercial awareness alongside creativity
Market level
Competitors and consumers, to have an understanding of where your brand/product sits within a commercial interface of the fashion industry.
Research methods utilised could include:
Understanding of marketing business models
Project planning
Report writing
Research planning
Primary and secondary research
Consumer behaviour
Marketing review
Case studies
S.W.O.T.
i-map
Research evaluation
This unit is about being able to articulate and communicate a deeper knowledge than the surface approach of “ I chose this because I like red”. Deep thinking changes not only our viewpoint of the world, but also that of others and that design can challenge perception, even change lives.
